I have just bought myself a Mac after years of PC use. Mac Pro tower system twin 3.0Ghz Quad core with 10 gig RAM I have a Sony LISSA receiver/CD/MD system, all components connected via firewire cables. On the PC I was never able to get the PC to control any functions of the amp except the volume control, and both PC and Amp recognised each other only as 'Unknown' The Sony software was only compatible with Win ME/Win2k. I could play audio from the PC via the fire wire connection thru the amp, and conversly record audio from the amp on the PC via the Firewire. I was really happy when I plugged the amp into the Mac, the amp input selector now had a 'Macintosh' input option and the hardware profiler on the Mac showed the three Sony components correctly, (Sony STR, CDP and MDP).

If I plug a USB audio device in (ART USB Phono Plus phono to USB convertor), it is instantly recognised, but cant get any audio in or out of the firewire to the Sony receiver amp. 
Any one got any ideas?
The OS on the Mac is a fresh install with no other software, so nothing interefering with the Firewire. So in summary; the PC does not recognise the Sony amp properly but I have audio in/out. The mac recognises the Sony amp.but no audio in/out How can this be fixed.any ideas? Okay, 5 years later and let's solve this!
I have also obtained a Sony Lissa amplifier (STR-LSA1) and of course it will not send and receive audio over firewire from my Mac Mini (OSX 10.8.5). After doing some Googling before even trying, I knew this would be the case and after now seeing how far it actually gets and doing further research, I believe the problem is that the Apple core audio firewire support only allows for RAW audio streams over firewire, whilst the Lissa uses the SPDIF (no surprise there!?) protocol over firewire. Here's the page which made the issue quite clear, from someone who had a similar problem making Lissa work with Linux: IEC 61883-6 support several date format types and indeed allows for unspecified formats. Even more importantly, it appears that each frame (could be packet) of data can in fact contain both SPDIF and whatever other format is being used although I'm not sure why at this point other than suspecting that Sony had considerable input into the standard. Obviously Apple did not allow for this SPDIF data or else it falls over when it finds nothing other than SPDIF. Now the question is, how to read/send a SPDIF stream over firewire with Mac OS X? Back to doing some further research.

Firewire Audio, and specifically IEC 61883-6 (otherwise known as Yamaha mLAN or Audio and Music Transmission Protocol or A/M Protocol) is on the verge of extinction. Yamaha dropped support in about 2008 whilst other vendors appear to have also moved on.

Apple CoreAudio is not as universal as Apple would have us believe. 61883-6 products have had issues with the various versions of OS X whilst many of these products use the supposedly supported RAW data format. Sony Lissa's use of the SPDIF (IEC 60958) protocol over Firewire (i.Link / IEEE 1394) may appear to be logical and perhaps clever, however it appears that next to no other vendors or products used SPDIF in this way. In summary, To capture or play the Lissa's SPDIF streams with OS X would require a specific driver which can access the Firewire port at a very low level. This is beyond my expertise at the present time. My solution is to look at the Raspberry Pi, or more likely the Hummingboard as a way to use Firewire audio in Linux. The Hummingboard has a Mini PCIe slot which will accept a Firewire board.
